Methods

Summary

Section I: Gravitational Acceleration Measurement

The first step of this project is to determine the local gravitational force at the location of our laboratory. Since we are determining the gravitational force experienced by the seeds based on the total vector force experienced, it is important that an accurate measure o f the local gravitational force is obtained. This is done by using a pendulum. We will swing the pendulum in 5 sets of 10 swings, then average the pendulum swing period. Using the Time=2Pi SQRT(Length/Gravitational Acceleration) equation, we can determine the local gravitation acceleration at the location of the experiment.

Challenges

Procedure I: Gravitational Acceleration Measurement

The challenge in determining the gravitational acceleration in the local area is ensuring an accurate swing rate calculation. Atmospheric friction, elasticity of the pendulum material, and inaccuracies in length measurements can all combine to effect the accuracy of the measurement. The hope is to overcome these challenges by conducting the measurement multiple times and averaging the results.
