About This Project
There are many unexplained natural phenomena lumped under the category of cryptids--unverified or hidden species. Through global expeditions, the Institute for Hidden Species and Expeditions will blend scientific rigor with local knowledge to deepen biological and cultural understanding. By combining cryptozoology, ecology, and cultural studies, IHSE will enhance community's knowledge on biodiversity while promoting ecological conservation.

The Institute for Hidden Species and Expeditions (IHSE) is dedicated to investigating cryptids—unverified or hidden species—through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates cryptozoology, ecology, and anthropology. IHSE conducts ethical and scientifically rigorous field expeditions in often remote areas to document cryptids, gather biological samples, and record cultural narratives. Each team, comprising cryptozoologists, biologists, and cultural anthropologists, collaborates closely with local guides to ensure accuracy and cultural sensitivity. But why cryptids? Beyond fascination, studying cryptids offers the potential to discover unknown species, shed light on biodiversity, and deepen our understanding of ecosystems.
What is the significance of this project?
Cryptid research, such as expeditions for species like the Mokele-mbembe or the Yeti, often leads to the discovery of undocumented species, highlighting the ecological importance of these regions. These expeditions target under-researched ecosystems, supporting conservation efforts. By integrating local knowledge, cryptid research fosters cooperation in conservation, as seen in the Orang Pendek studies in Sumatra, which emphasize rainforest preservation for species like the Sumatran tiger. High-profile hunts for creatures like the Tasmanian tiger raise public awareness and mobilize resources for conservation. .
What are the goals of the project?
The goals of the Institute for Hidden Species and Expeditions (IHSE) are to:
- Conduct research and expeditions in and around the state of Iowa.
- Investigate Cryptids: Conduct rigorous research on cryptids to enhance biodiversity knowledge.
- Honor Cultural Narratives: Record and respect local lore, valuing cultural insights into cryptid phenomena.
- Promote Ethical Practices: Follow strict guidelines to minimize ecological impact and ensure responsible research.
- Enhance Education: Offer programs to build cryptozoology’s credibility and engage both academics and enthusiasts.
- Support Conservation: Contribute to species conservation by raising awareness of overlooked ecosystems and species.
These goals help IHSE advance scientific understanding and cultural appreciation responsibly.

Cryptids, or unverified and hidden species, encompass many unexplained natural phenomena. The Institute for Hidden Species and Expeditions (IHSE) aims to deepen both biological and cultural understanding by blending scientific rigor with local knowledge through global expeditions. By integrating cryptozoology, ecology, and cultural studies, IHSE will not only expand communities’ knowledge of biodiversity but also promote ecological conservation. |

Project Timeline
In the first six months, the Institute will establish its structure, launch initial expeditions, and develop educational programs while publishing early findings. In the second half of the year, efforts will focus on refining expedition methods, expanding educational offerings, and strengthening community ties through public talks, all aimed at building IHSE's reputation and securing additional funding.

Joseph Thornburg
Joseph Bryan Thornburg was born on December 6, 1967, in Chula Vista, California. Growing up with a strong sense of curiosity and determination, he developed a passion for diverse fields ranging from science and education to the metaphysical. After graduating high school in 1987, he embarked on a distinguished career in the U.S. Army, serving during the Persian Gulf War as a soldier in the artillery (13B10). His time in the military provided him with invaluable life experiences and instilled a sense of discipline and leadership.
In addition to his military service, Joseph is an ordained minister and leads The Final Battles Ministries, a ministry that connects spiritual exploration with an understanding of the metaphysical.
Joseph is also an avid reader and lifelong learner, with a particular interest in the intersections between science, religion, and the supernatural. His hobbies include playing tabletop games, such as Dungeons & Dragons, and exploring the mysteries of cryptids and paranormal phenomena.
Joseph’s work in both the spiritual and intellectual realms underscores his commitment to lifelong learning and a deep curiosity about the mysteries of the universe. He is driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact on both the intellectual and metaphysical communities.
