A quick note

The program schedule for this year's Society of Vertebrate Paleontology meeting in Salt Lake City was announced a few weeks ago. We had already received work that the Mastodons of Unusual Size abstract had been accepted for a poster presentation. Now we know that our poster time is on Wednesday, October 26, in the first poster session of the meeting.

For those of you in Southern California, on October 8 we're having a special celebration for Max, Max's Ice Age Soiree. This October marks 21 years since Max was discovered, so we're throwing a party (21 and over only; we have a party for all ages on October 1). Tickets for the event are $40; there will be more information up soon at the museum's website (westernsciencecenter.org).

About This Project

American mastodons lived all across North America during the Ice Age. Paleontologists long suspected that western mastodons differed in subtle ways from eastern ones, and our initial data suggest they may have been distinctive in size and tooth proportions. We plan to examine various museum collections to build a robust database of mastodon measurements, allowing us to document regional population differences and helping us understand ecosystem variation and animal dispersal during the Ice Age.
