93%! Coming in to the finish line.

Wow! Thanks to some extremely generous donations, we've made it to 93%, closer than ever to successful funding of the sequencing of the firefly genome! But remember, we only get the funds if we reach the 100% funding goal.  With only 4 days left in the campaign, we need your help to get the final word out to help raise the final 1/20th. Let's keep it up!

P.S. Flashing fireflies are now out from Florida to Massachusetts.  What better way to spend a Sunday night than firefly watching?  Find a local dark meadow, ideally with a source of water nearby. I almost guarentee you'll see fireflies if you stop by in the evening.  Our firefly of choice, Photinus pyralis, flashes at dusk just as the sun goes down.  Look for their distinctive flash pattern of the male fireflies, a 0.5 second rising "J"!

About This Project

Fireflies! These silent fireworks on warm summer nights fill us with wonder. But so much about these fascinating critters remains shrouded in mystery. Our team of biologists has joined forces to sequence the genome of the Big Dipper Firefly, Photinus pyralis. This project has the potential to foster important advances in bioscience and medicine, will illuminate how a complex trait like light production evolves, and will help guide future efforts to conserve disappearing firefly populations.

Blast off!
