Forsten's Tortoise

We were accompanied by representatives from the National Park Authority on a visit to areas near Lore Lindu National Park, located about 50 km south of Palu, Central Sulawesi Province.  We toured through a portion of the buffer zone and upon leaving the area, we encountered two men who were in the possession of an adult male and an adult female tortoise.  They informed us that they collected a total of 9 tortoises within the last week from the area.  This level of harvesting, and within the National Park buffer zone, suggests larger numbers within the actual boundaries of the park and we deemed this area appropriate for inclusion in the proposed survey sites.

About This Project

Sulawesi, Indonesia, is home to many species found nowhere else on Earth. Although rich in biodiversity, Sulawesi has only two endemic turtles: the Endangered Forsten's Tortoise and the Critically Endangered Sulawesi Forest Turtle. We propose to conduct surveys to determine current population sizes and distributions of these turtles, initiating a long-term project to support turtle conservation, graduate research education, citizen science, capacity building, and community-based awareness.
