Depth logging equipment frozen into pond!

In the photo below we're removing monitoring equipment from a pond which froze earlier than we anticipated. Our old monitoring method used 5-8 small temperature tracking devices distributed along a string from the deepest to shallowest part of a wetland. By looking at the temperature signature of each temperature tracking device we can determine the water level of the wetland. Our new monitoring technique (the one this crowdfunding campaign supports) uses just a single sensor that sits near the bottom of each pond. This new type of sensor keep a record of the pressure of water pushing down on them. We can calibrate this pressure record into a depth record using local air pressure data. Using the new sensors results in much more detailed data, much less disturbance to the wetland site, and a much easier installation and retrieval process!

About This Project

Vernal Pools are temporary wetlands that fill annually and support a unique set of species. The goal of our study in Massachusetts is to better understand how water level in vernal pools fluctuates throughout the year. Studies like ours are critical to protecting species that rely on vernal pools.
