3D model of oyster bed around pilingsThe first stage in an oyster’s life cycle is the free-swimming larval stage. After about three weeks, the larva attaches to a hard substrate such as pilings seen here. 

 A large number of oysters often join together, thus forming an oyster reef (also referred to as oyster bed, oyster mat).
 Once attached to a surface, oysters will stay there for the remainder of their lives.

About This Project

Mapping Northeast Florida Ecosystems with Unmanned Aircraft Systems

Jacksonville University

Students within the Jacksonville University School of Aviation are working collaboratively with the Marine Science Research Institute and the Department of Geography and the Environment to use unmanned aircraft systems, or drones, to create orthomosaic maps and 3D models of the oyster reefs in the Northern Jacksonville area. The students will begin mapping in January 2016. The maps and findings will be presented to the backers of this project as well as our partners for further analysis.
