Project update!

Hi everyone! I know I was planning on doing regular updates, but between the holidays, family and personal health problems that all fell by the wayside. But I'm back and am planning to put up new notes every other Friday.

What have I been doing in the meantime?

I have been working on my dissertation, of course! As it turns out some of the equipment is back-ordered, so the extraction from FCR is on hold until that comes in. That means I've been focusing on the plant reference collection. I went out a couple of weeks ago with illustrious Leslie Bush to collect wild plants from the Austin area, and next week I will be out in the Trans-Pecos region collecting more arid climate plants. There will be a big plant-based post after I get back and I will start putting up some of the early spectra results!

I also went to the SAA's in San Fransisco. I didn't present, but I did go to several interesting sessions and met a lot of really great people. Two of my publications were in book room, which was super exciting! Several of my friends and family live out there - I stayed with a friend from high school, and she took me to Berkley campus, where we got the awesome photo you see at the top of the post.

About This Project

This innovative, collaborative project addresses whether infrared spectroscopy can be used to characterize organic residues on fire-cracked rocks (FCR), enabling archaeologists to accurately identify what was cooked in earth ovens. To do so, I will create a reference collection and test both modern experimentally produced residues and residues from archaeological FCR. Some initial work has already been published - there's a link below.
Blast off!
