This is what they look like when they hatch out of the capsule. They swim and feed by beating the long compound cilia of the velum. After a few weeks of growing in the plankton, they shed the velum, develop a new feeding apparatus, and become creeping juveniles. Meanwhile, the veliger larvae can be carried a long way on ocean currents!
