Preliminary Results from 2014 Measurements
Greetings! We want to share a report describing the preliminary results from our October 2014 measurement campaign at our two Santa Cruz study sites. The redwood trees that we sampled then were more water-stressed than we have previously measured in trees at other locations during non-drought years, and we expect them to be even more stressed this year. We collected leaf samples in 2014 for analysis of their stable carbon isotope composition, which provides an integrated index of how the leaves are responding to environmental conditions. We hope to collect more leaf samples at the end of the 2015 summer season to compare with leaves collected in 2014, and to collect increment cores to evaluate the effects of 4 years of consecutive drought on the growth of redwood trees and forests.
