Exploring the route of the planned canal project. UCA's saving species initiative.

100%

We are currently on our first expedition to document biodiversity along the route of the planned canal. It is important to do this before it is too late. We started on the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua (Brito region), focusing on three different spots. We observed and collected samples and DNA from birds, snails and butterflies.

Here we attache some pictures of the area, along with some species found along the way. UCA students were trained to look for birds, snails and butterflies, as well as to describe the local flora in different ecosystems. Stay tuned to our FaceBook page for more information.

About This Project

The interoceanic canal through Nicaragua will cause irreparable harm to Mesoamerican marine and terrestrial flora and fauna and the gene flow. We hope to save Nicaragua's biodiversity by collecting samples along the canal route to create a baseline DNA registry of existing species before canal damage makes this impossible. Many future treatments/cures for plant and animal diseases may be hidden among this unexplored biodiversity (think aspirin and quinine), as well as new resources for industry.

Blast off!
