Research is best when blended with education

The stream is a great place to teach. This shot is from the field-based stream ecology course I teach in even-year summers.

As a faculty member at a Primarily Undergraduate Institution, everything I do contributes to educating students. Whether taking students into the field for 16-days of intensive coursework (as pictured above), streaming via Twitch.tv for my stream ecology labs during the pandemic, or working individually with students in the lab and field so that they can gain valuable research experience, educational experiences are a key part of what I do.

This semester-long sabbatical will be the first time since I entered college as an undergraduate that I won't be formally involved in coursework in the Fall. Let's just say that's a long time. I will, however, be making time to do some educational visits. I love getting to present about different topics to both college-aged and K-12 students and I'm happy to incorporate such stops into my sampling schedule.

So far, here are the educational stops:

  • 10 September at the Robert B. Annis Water Resources Institute associated with Grand Valley State University in Michigan.

  • 13 October at Daemen College in New York.

I am happy to add more visits to the schedule, so if you are an educator and interested in having me visit, please send me a message and let me know.

About This Project

Successful freshwater conservation efforts require an understanding of genetic diversity and how it changes over time, data we often lack. This study will revisit populations of the saw-combed fishfly (an environmentally sensitive aquatic insect) sampled ~20 years ago to see which populations survived, how genetic diversity has changed, and whether next-generation DNA sequencing gives us a better understanding of how this species recolonized North America after the last glacial retreat.

Blast off!
