100% funded! Thank you all for your support!

The team firefly is thrilled to see that our firefly genome project is fully funded today! Many thanks to all 90 backers (at the time of writing this lab note) who have given your generous support to our project. This crowdfunding campaign has been an amazing experience for us not only to be able to raise the fund necessary for carrying the research forward but also to reach out to the general public about this exciting scientific adventure. It is so reassuring for every one of us to get connected to people from all over the world who share the same curiosity and passion about fireflies and are willing to support.

Fireflies have been casting their magical light on our planet for hundreds of millions of years. Now you just helped make it possible to unlock so many of their biological mysteries through sequencing their genome. Stay tuned, as we will update our research progress as this project moves along.

Glad to help get this project off the ground and look forward to hearing about progress as it happens. The toys you send us will also be lots of fun. One day I hope you have an "open house" when we can come in and see the lab and meet the folks who perform the magic.

About This Project

Fireflies! These silent fireworks on warm summer nights fill us with wonder. But so much about these fascinating critters remains shrouded in mystery. Our team of biologists has joined forces to sequence the genome of the Big Dipper Firefly, Photinus pyralis. This project has the potential to foster important advances in bioscience and medicine, will illuminate how a complex trait like light production evolves, and will help guide future efforts to conserve disappearing firefly populations.

Blast off!
