Regarding the use of MATLAB, we hope to use it to run a computerized decision-making task - called the Cognitive Effort Discounting (COGED) task - that was programmed in MATLAB by its original creators (see https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4445645/ ). As for the actual stats analyzes, you're quite right that R and other open-source languages are more cost-effective for such purposes, and I intend to use R (and/or MPlus, for which I already have a license) to run the analyses for this study.
