Very good idea Colin! We're too far down the path for this study, but maybe in the future.

Fighting fake news by replicating the motivated numeracy effect

Hey Denny - great question. Motivated numeracy, as a part of motivated reasoning is very easy to exploit. I'm not sure whether many people do it with full knowledge of the cognitive mechanisms at play or not, but cherry picking scientific studies would be one way you could do this. For example in the field of nutrition where there is an ongoing fat-versus-carbs public debate, which is in fact a false dichotomy of what science tells us about calories. https://slate.com/technology/2018/03/big-sugar-isnt-to-blame-for-steering-us-away-from-fat.html

Quite likely John, however it appears that the strongest effect may be for people's most deeply held beliefs. Down here in Melbourne that's probably Australian Rules Football!
