Thank you for inquiry! We aren't sure what the primary reason is for the sharp population decline. Several hypothesized factors contributing to this decline include heightened mercury levels, hematazoan infections, habitat destruction (especially in winter), forest management practices that reduce breeding success, northward breeding range retraction due to the effects of climate change, and other possible reasons. There is much we need to learn yet!
