- Jennifer GroganHi Sue and Andrea! I'd like to donate a bit, but the pledge button seems to be grayed out? Or possibly I'm having a really blonde moment. ;)Oct 18, 20140
- Sarah McAnultyResearcherHi Jennifer, You can still donate but you have to actually mail a check to our lab because our crowdfunding campaign ended September 16. The adopt-a-squid program is still in effect too, so just e-mail me your details at sarahj.mack@gmail.com and I can let you know what to do if you're still interested :) Thanks! SarahOct 23, 20140

- James Thomas Griffith IIIBackerThis is a rad experiment. If there's any way I can get the name a squid reward and the print that'd be great, otherwise I'll kick in another $20 for the name. Is there any way I can let you know the name and which print after the fact though? This is a surprise for my girlfriend as she is a fan of both cephalopods and science. My email is jamestgriffith@gmail.com If there's no way to hit me up there just send "Euprymna", looks jollier.Sep 10, 20140

- Kate VandersliceBackerHi! This looks like an awesome project and I'm glad I could help support your PHD work! (I'm also jealous you get to work with squid) A few questions: what are your methods? Why did you decide to do this particular project? How do you like the PHD program at the University of Connecticut? I'm finishing up my undergraduate degree this year in Field Biology and I am looking to go into some sort of graduate program, so any bits of advise are welcome! Good luck with everything!Sep 07, 20140

- Sarah RispoliBackerMy husband and I would love to name a juvenile squid the following: Sparkleface Squidington. We hope you get all of the funding that you need for this spectacularly cool and educational cause. Have a wonderful time and we can't wait to see Sparkleface Squidington in action! Random questions we have if you have a spare moment: - What is the life expectancy of Sparkleface Squidington? - Since we're naming a younger one, is there any chance of also getting an adult photo when he/she grows up? - What experiments will Sparkleface be participating in? Thank you so much!Aug 20, 20140
- Sarah McAnultyResearcherHi Sarah! -Sparkeface will live for about 9 months to a year. That's the full life expectancy of Hawaiian bobtail squid. -Sure, we'd love to send you an adult picture of Sparkleface! Just remind us in a couple months and we'll send one over. - We're not totally sure yet, it will depend on how big sparkleface is, and the type of data I acquire between now and when he's big enough to participate. I'm sure I'll be taking some of his immune cells, but I don't know if they will go through the flow cytometer, get tagged with fluorescent proteins and photographed on the microscope, or introduced to various strains of bacteria and then observed (also under a microscope). Sorry it took so long to get back to you! The semester just started so it's been a crazy time in squidland :)Sep 05, 20140
- Katrina Daila NeiburgaBackerAs a future scientist myself, I really hope you succeed! Also bacteria in squids, super cool, I wish I can do something as awesome in the future, sadly I can't donate enough to visit the squid facility, but at least I can do something! Good luck with research! ^^ KatAug 19, 20140
- Katrina Daila NeiburgaBackerOh and I would like to name the squiddo Kwaken Moonshine fon Ramen (also would be great if you could mention in the note that this one's a squid for Milly. Since I can't gift my friend a real marine animal, I can at least gift her a squid that exists somewhere on this planet and is named just for her). Thanks ^^Aug 19, 20140

- Arian T.BackerGlowing Squids!Aug 13, 20140
- Carina M. GsottbauerBackerWhere do you get your squids? And what happens when you are "done" with them? (I'm doing a PhD in marine Biology, so I understand that there isn't always a happy ending for the animals.)Aug 13, 20140
- Sarah McAnultyResearcherWe get our some of squid from Hawaii on collecting trips about twice a year and some we raise here in the lab. Some squid are used more than once for experiments and some are only used once, it depends on the experiment we're doing that day. Many of the females we have live their whole lives out in our squid facility because another project in our lab focuses on the reproductive system and we need a fresh supply of eggs for those experiments. Those lady squid are just there to hang out, enjoy the shrimp buffet and lay eggs to their hearts content. Some experiments will require that we sacrifice the squid, but we follow humane practices as laid out by the EU's guidelines for humane treatment (there are no guidelines here in the United States for invertebrates). Squid are fully anesthetized for all procedures done here in the lab. I can post a video of the anesthetic process if you're interested!Aug 13, 20142

- Drew HuebnerBackerHi! I work as a Marine Mammal Observer while I apply to for Masters degrees in Marine Biology. This is an awesome idea for funding and whoever thought of it should be taken out for free beers! I'll be telling my other Marine Bio friends to throw some help your way. I'm not sure if this is the area to request the name of the squid chosen for me, but if so I'd like to name one "Squilliam". If that's already taken then "Calcifer" will work too. If I ask somewhere else, I'll probably find it! Thanks!Aug 07, 20140
- Sarah McAnultyResearcherLol! Nobody's taken Squilliam, it's all yours!Aug 08, 20140
