Hello lovely bat research supporters. First off, a quick update on the diet research; we have sent in our last batch of samples to the sequencing facility and are currently just waiting to hear back when all the bat poop DNA is sequenced and ready for us to analyze. The analysis will basically involve us matching DNA "barcodes" to known arthropod species (insects, arachnids, etc.) to see what each bat species was munching on.

Now for some other research news in these slow, strange times. My first peer-reviewed research article, In the shadow of the rising sun: a systematic review of Japanese bat research and conservation, has just been published in the scientific journal, Mammal Review (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/mam.12226). The actual full paper is behind a paywall unfortunately, but if you would like to read it, please let me know. Here is the graphical abstract.

In the shadow of the rising sun: a systematic review of Japanese bat research and conservation、Mammal Reviewという研究雑誌に公表されたばかりです(https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/mam.12226)。

We also had a press release at Kyoto University concerning the review article and a couple of English sites have already published the story. Here's the most accurate one so far: https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2020-12/ku-dlt120320.php

Hope you all are doing well despite this crazy year. More updates to come when we finally get the fecal DNA sequences back!

About This Project

JP / EN

The Ryukyu tube-nosed bat and Yanbaru whiskered bat are two endangered bats that only exist in the remaining forests of three islands in the Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. However, we don't know enough about these bats to design conservation strategies for them. I will extract and analyze the DNA from 50 previously collected bat poop samples from Okinawa. The DNA will tell us what the bats are eating, which in turn will tell us where they are eating, and therefore where to protect.

Blast off!
