Saiga Conservation Alliance

Much effort has already been put into the conservation of the critically endangered saiga antelope. The Saiga Conservation Alliance (SCA) – one of the collaborators of my expedition – is a network of researchers and conservationists who study and protect the saigas. The association was officially established in 2006 and has been working hard ever since.

The SCA aims to restore the saiga to its position as the flagship species of the Eurasian steppes, reflecting the species’ cultural and economic value to local people and its critical role in the steppe ecosystem. Importantly, while the saiga is their target species, the SCA aims to conserve the steppe ecosystem as a whole, taking into account human needs as well as other species of the fauna and flora. The association works collaboratively and disseminates their work extensively not only to those working for saiga conservation but also to governments and the public throughout the world. For example, they help with raising awareness of saigas in local schools through funding saiga-related projects, such as a saiga mural painting project.

I am excited to be collaborating with the SCA in my upcoming expeditions. There is only one week to go with this crowdfunding campaign. Please help me reach my goal and spread the word to friends and colleagues. You can also increase your pledge, if you wish so. Your help is much appreciated!

About This Project

Mass mortality events (MMEs) present an important threat to the survival of the Saiga antelopes in Kazakhstan and Mongolia. While certain microbes have been identified as prominent causes in saiga MMEs, the triggers for the invasions remain unknown. Through extensive sampling across multiple years, we will investigate the possible role of microbiome perturbations in these incidents. Improved understanding of the mechanisms behind saiga MMEs may help us prevent future incidents.
