Our heartfelt thanks for your generous donations.

Dear Backers - We would like to express our heartfelt thanks for your generous donations and interest in our Nicaraguan biodiversity research project. We have surpassed our first goal of raising $5,000 and now it seems we will be able to accomplish even more than we had planned. With your help we are now in a position to begin recruiting, selecting and training local research volunteers and to begin purchasing and preparing their field kits. We'll do our utmost to collect as many samples as quickly as possible and bring them back to our lab for DNA analysis and identification. We will keep you all posted on our progress and how the funds are being spent. Please continue to spread the word and share this site with your friends and colleagues. Sincerely, Dr. Jorge Huete

About This Project

The interoceanic canal through Nicaragua will cause irreparable harm to Mesoamerican marine and terrestrial flora and fauna and the gene flow. We hope to save Nicaragua's biodiversity by collecting samples along the canal route to create a baseline DNA registry of existing species before canal damage makes this impossible. Many future treatments/cures for plant and animal diseases may be hidden among this unexplored biodiversity (think aspirin and quinine), as well as new resources for industry.

Blast off!
