Why is this research so important?

The goal of this study is to investigate the effects of human activity on the dolphin population in the Drowned Cayes, Belize and to determine if an increase in human activity over the last decade has affected the general use of the study area. Results will contribute to understanding the effects of human impact on bottlenose dolphins and other coastal marine mammal species. One of our project objectives is to provide a summary of our results stakeholders in Belize. This information is essential for stakeholders attempting to influence policy regarding conservation of marine areas, such as what terrestrial areas should be avoided when developing, as well as which water areas should be restricted by boats.

This goal is shared among various researchers in different parts of the world. An example of the power research can have in creating awareness is the work done by Thorne et. al (2012). This project, as described in the article linked below, created a map outlining 21 resting habitats of spinner dolphins in Hawaii. This map can be used to restrict access to those bays during the times of resting. This way, important habitats are protected, while the other parts of coastal waters could continue to be used for ecotourism. Research like this, can help develop sustainable tourism programs that limit negative impacts on dolphins while maintaining economic gain.

About This Project

Has increased tourism in Belize impacted the dolphin population? In the late 1990s, Self-Sullivan and her peers determined that mangrove cayes provided foraging and nursery habitat for dolphins and manatees in Belize. It was predicted that increasing cruise ship tourism would have negative effects on the dolphin population. With your help, we will test that hypothesis and determine changes in the population structure, habitat use, and behavior.
