Hey Andrea, this is so cool. Are the spiders pretty cooperative when you measure them? Do they hold still? Also, do you extend the legs before you measure them?

Hi Oscar, Some were more cooperative than others. Most were pretty squirmy, because, yes, I had to extend their legs. I would put them in a Ziploc bag and gently flatten them out. Sometimes I needed assistance to keep them still!

About This Project

There are 40,000+ species of spider in the world. Spiders are beneficial predators & an integral part of a healthy ecosystem. My goal is to find out if there is a quantifiable relationship between morphology and foraging behavior of spiders. Based on preliminary research I conducted in the Ecuadorian Amazon, it seems the answer is yes! The more we understand about these animals, the more we can protect rainforest ecosystems as a whole.
