There are two breeding seasons. One during late spring and early summer which takes part in the northern part of their distribution (e.g. Sonoran desert and Arizona) and another during late summer and early fall closer to the center of Mexico (e.g. Jalisco and Guerrero). Females coincide in maternity caves and gather their babies together in 'patches' to keep them warm and safe while they go out in search of food.

Females usually only give birth to one pup. They invest a lot of energy to raise this baby until it is about 3 or 4 weeks old and ready to fly. Females teach the pups which fruits and flowers are best to eat and make sure they are fat and ready to fly with them back to the winter roosting sites.
