Haven't backed any projects yet!

Thanks Denny! I'm happy that people are interested in this project :) I did get to collect the samples myself. Since corals are doing quite poorly, how they get collected is extremely strict and regulated. The permit I got from the State of Hawaii allowed me to collect small fragments (~2cm) using hand+hammer+chisel. It's different between species but for the branching species (Montipora capitata), it was easiest to just snap off a tiny bit by hand without tools because a hammer and chisel would break the entire branch. For the more mound-shaped coral (Porites compressa), I had to use the hammer and chisel as it was not possible by hand.

They're such an important and beautiful ecosystem so I hope I can do some good for them! After all, they do so much for us. Happy diving, Bob!
