Most recently I was in Chapeco, SC, for my sabbatical. I was part of a Ciencia Sem Frontieres project with a student who worked in my lab on his sandwich during his PhD. He is now a faculty member at Chapeco, and married to another student from my lab. Before that I visited Vicosa MG for a seminar. That was where Daniel, my student, was getting his PhD. And before that I collaborated wtih people at Oswaldo Cruz, Rio de Janiero on a project of aedes in Rio. Also vacationed in Florianopolis SC, which was great. i suppose I should have written this in Portuguese. I see you did a sandwich at UBC. Your english is excellent. Looks like your project is getting close to the goal

Boa sorte com este projecto. A função de estabilimentos é uma questão de pesquisa interessante que alguns dos meus próprios alunos estão buscando no La Selva Costa Rica.

Great news today. Our project was one of the top three in donor numbers in the Botany Challenge. Because of that, Experiment will supplement our funding with $200. THanks!! so much to all of our friends and colleagues who donated. We have 24 days left to reach our goal of $3400. If we don't then there will be 0 funding. So if you think prairies and restoration are important this is an excellent project that you can support. And your support will go to fund a graduate student and undergraduates for the summer. The research focuses on a really interesting group of plants that tap the roots of other plants for nutrients. They could be called "blood" sucking plants, in the sense the tap the "blood" of their host plants.

Susan - Thanks! so much for your generous donation. We really appreciate help from our friends. We are making a little headway toward hitting the funding target we set. It is an interesting process... Hope you make it through the hurricane OK.
