Arrived on Cumberland Island, GA 🐢

Hello Everyone,

There is only little time left to donate, 3 days left. Again, thank you for your generous donations. The tortoises and I appreciate your generosity.

I have finally arrived on Cumberland Island to begin my research. When i arrived me and my research partner Hunter started doing burrow count surveying on the 60 acre field called Stafford field. The field rests upon the north part of woods called stafford woods, another location which I'll be surveying.

Stafford Field, the said densest population of tortoises on Cumberland Island. The main study location for my research.

As of right now I am waiting for the funding to be able to start trappi and tagging tortoises with transmitters and data loggers. These devices are critical in the process of getting a better understanding of Gopher Tortoises. The transmitters will allow me as a researcher to keep track of movement patterns. As well, data loggers will give insight on how the Gopher Tortoises regulate their temperature inside and outside of their burrow.

About This Project

An unstudied population of Gopher tortoises, a Threatened species, exists on Cumberland Island, Georgia USA. In the summer of 2016, I conducted a pilot survey on one large population on the Island. In 2017, the goal is to survey the remaining Island to determine the total population size & characteristics. Information on this keystone species must be known in order to effectively manage conservation areas vs. human use areas on the Island.

Blast off!
