Indeed fascinating and enthralling. A discovery awaiting at each step. Perhaps, inferences about internal social structures should be taken cautiously - mainly with regards to division of labor. While reference is made to “large populations”, farther removed from permanent water sources - the very fact that such settlements came to be established is quite relevant, and likely to provide significant insight. If there were concerns about enemies (marauders or pillaging intruders, etc.)are they clearly and neatly identifiable? Were those outposts observation, or scouting, or rather safer refuges ones...? Additionally, how permanent and lasting were these aggregations supposed to be, how far or distant would they stand from nearest larger urban centres, and finally whether there would be established therein some sort of productive activity associated with the very location? As a corollary: construction material, were obtained from the immediate surroundings, easily extracted and ready to be deployed without major effort/strain or intensive labor.

People of the Swamp: LiDAR and "Invisible" Structures at El Pilar
Very good and interesting. Hard to make sense, however, of the 134m to 305m color schemed column profiling. It rather suggests that green stands at the bottom, while brown at the top - while the site survey images (Profile #7) display exactly the opposite. At any rate, the almost 200m change in elevation over an extent of about 500m is quite relevant. What do the colors stand for?

People of the Swamp: LiDAR and "Invisible" Structures at El Pilar
Through the EXPERIMENT e-mail, one learns that there is a large variety of works being carried out in the area right round you. An important one, addresses what the Mayans used to traditionally produce - and this touches upon an aspect that had not been made clear for the El Pilar project, namely: sustainability (besides the continuous preservation of the forest). By the same token, it is gratifying to learn that you had succeeded in reaching out and catching the attention of effective source of support. Keep well.
