Recent Report: Nautiluses Vulnerable to even LOW Exploitation

TRAFFIC Report on the Nautilus Trade and How to go Forward

TRAFFIC, an organization that monitors trade of animals, released its findings on the nautilus shell trade. In short, (1) nautilus fishing still occurs, EVEN in areas with laws prohibiting it, (2) nautiluses reproduce VERY SLOW, (3) and that the WORLD WIDE TRADE IS A THREAT TO THE CONSERVATION OF NAUTILUSES.

One objective was clear: SURVEY more areas to find out the current state of nautilus populations.

About This Project

Save the Nautilus

Living nautiluses are the last members of an ancient lineage that traces back 500 million years. However, decades of nautilus fishing has resulted in significant population declines. I am working with an international team of researchers, educators, and students to determine just how many nautiluses are left. The data we collect is critical to developing effective management plans to protect nautiluses. Without action, these living fossils will simply be fossils. Please save the nautiluses.
