Why does speeding up wood decay result in carbon sequestration? Wouldn't this speed up the carbon cycle instead by making it available to be incorporated into new growth?

I'm confused by the "Context" paragraph. Are the peptides interacting with the white blood cells or with the antibodies? Or are the antibodies on the surface of the white blood cells?
